Supreme Court to be Moved on NET Criteria Verdict , Ph 078-380-239-56

The forum for aggrieved candidates, who allege flaws in the qualification norms of the National Eligibility Test (NET) of the University Grants Commission (UGC), will file a review petition in the Supreme Court challenging its verdict upholding the final qualifying criteria policy of the UGC for the test conducted on June 24, 2012, in Humanities category.

The candidates had earlier challenged the Commission’s decision to alter the qualification norms after the publication of the results, and obtained favourable verdicts from the Kerala High Court and the High Court division bench at Nagpur but the Apex Court upheld the policy of the UGC for fixing eligibility criteria for candidates to qualify in the NET, saying it was not ‘arbitrary and illegal.’ Supreme Court had then said that the UGC’s decision insisting that an aggregate of 65 per cent in three papers was necessary to qualify for general category candidates.

A Sajith, secretary, UGC-NET Exam Result June 2012 Aggrieved Candidates Forum, said the decision to file a review petition was taken after observing that the aggrieved candidates were not given proper opportunity to present the case effectively because of the distortion of facts and truth by the UGC in the Supreme Court.

“UGC in a notification for the advertisement of NET exam-June 2012 had displayed fixed qualifying criterion for all the categories in a clear-cut terms. But, after the announcement of the result of the said exam, the UGC, in an arbitrarily manner, altered its minimum criterion of qualification, which was raised way higher than the one which was fixed earlier and advertised in the notification for NET June-2012 exam. This flawed and sudden change in criterion after examination has resulted in more than 1.45 lakh examinees become ineligible,” he said.

He said they would start campaigning against Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development Shashi Tharoor and his predecessor E Ahamed for their stand on the issue. Forum members said they might field candidates against both leaders in the coming Parliament elections
